I have dedicated my whole life to serving young people, since long before I was elected to City Council. As Chairman of the Youth Services Committee, I have been an advocate for increased services and resources for youth in New York City. I won a major victory for our city’s youth by expanding the Summer Youth Employment program to 60,000 jobs, the largest this crucial program has ever been.
• I have also worked to tackle our city’s disconnected youth crisis, these young people ages 16-24 who are not in school or working are some of our city’s most vulnerable people, and need resources and opportunities to succeed. This is why I introduced and passed legislation to create a taskforce on disconnected youth, and to create a department of workforce development within the Department of Small Business Services to prepare this high needs population for high quality jobs.
